I have come across this problem when installing AlphaCAM on my laptop which is running Windows 98, and uses a DK38 DESkey PCMCIA card. The installation of the software causes the configuration settings for the DK38 DESkey to change which in turn causes problems in shutting down and restarting the laptop. Therefore after installation do not choose to restart immediately, instead follow the procedure below: -
- click START button
- cursor to SETTINGS
- click CONTROL PANEL
- double click SYSTEM
- click DEVICE MANAGER tab
- double click DESkey
- click DK38 DESkey
- click PROPERTIES
- click RESOURCES tab
- deselect tick box for USE AUTOMATIC SETTINGS
- click down arrow on the combo box for SETTING BASED ON:
- click either: - BASIC CONFIGURATION 0002 or BASIC CONFIGURATION 0003
- click OK
- click OK
- close CONTROL PANEL window
You should now be able to restart the laptop without any problems.
HOWEVER
In the likelihood that you selected to restart the computer after installation and it did not shutdown or restart properly, start up in SAFE MODE and follow the above procedure until you get to the RESOURCES tab in the DESkey PROPERTIES. Then continue with the procedure below: -
- click SET CONFIGURATION MANUALLY
- deselect tick box for AUTOMATIC SETTINGS
- click down arrow on the combo box for SETTING BASED ON:
- click either: - BASIC CONFIGURATION 0002 or - BASIC CONFIGURATION 0003
- click OK
You should then be presented with a message box asking if you wish to continue: -
-click YES
You will then be asked if you want to restart the computer: -
- click YES
Your laptop should now restart OK.
